I'm not sure how many of you have noticed that October 18th is becoming a day of EPIC proportions!
Just a few things to note:
24 Hour Comic Day will be held worldwide to celebrate the creation of comics. I've had friends participate in years past and the ultimate goal - create a brand, spankin' new 24 page comic within the span of 24 hours from scratch. Some lucky cities have gathering places/venues, others just round up a bunch of friends to support each other. A few hardcore artists go about it solo.
However, it's not just about creating comics - it's also about comic awareness. Pledges can be accepted for all pages completed and those funds will go to support the Hero Foundry, a non-profit group that pledges to get comics, graphic novels, and books into the hands of under-funded schools, libraries, hospitals, and other organizations.

Not an artist? Do you game?
Neil "TempleDog" LaPointe sent me some info on another event called "Extra Life" - Play games to Heal kids.
As the video (created by Neil!) above illustrates, anyone can play games to fight battles, win prizes, and save the world - but some kids are fighting for their lives against unseen enemies. They need a little help.
So on October 18th, they ask gamers from around the world to help raise money for Pediatric Cancer research by doing something we all love - playing games!

And lastly, on a more personal note - I also found that October 18th is my cousin's daughter's 1st birthday party. In Hawaii, first birthdays are a big event! The tradition goes back to the plantation days when the survival rates of infants was relatively low - but it's a great time to bring the family and close friends together to celebrate the first year of a baby's life. I obviously don't remember my own 1st birthday, but I've seen photos of the event. XD
What a month!
