Lines, Lines, Lines
Intermission Comic #9!
Is it called Comic Con? It should be called "Line Con"!
With some 150,000 people milling around in the same general place for 5 days, there are bound to be some... "traffic" issues. Aside from the infamous Twilight panel line that already started before we set up our table, there were lines everywhere for everything from restaurants, hotel check-ins, badge pick-up, for con exclusives, bathrooms, and yes, even elevators.
Behind the table, you don't notice it so much... until you have to go hunting for food mid-way thru the day. o_o;
What's the longest line you've (willingly) stood in? Aside from a 2 hour wait at Disneyland when they just opened the Indiana Jones ride, my longest line wait was probably Comic Con 2003 as an attendee. The line wrapped around the building to what I believe was the Marina... because I remember looking into windows of a bayfront restaurant. D: Yikes.
Other long lines? Probably to get the first iPhone with Scott. XD;
The longest line ive ever been in was probably Anime Expo like around 2006 i think. It took 4 hours just to get my badge to get in. I was only there 2 days and wasted 1 whole day getting in.
Ah.. I remember those days of AX. D: Was that still at the Anaheim CC? AX lines are notoriously long.
The worst line for me was the World Expo in Nagoya a few years back. I got there an hour before opening and was only about 5-7,000 people back in line. It got WAY worse for those who came later. Many of the exhibits for the big countries had lines of 4 hours+.
Ah! I remember you mentioning the Expo! So... which countries did you end up waiting for? o_O?
I'm not known for my patience so the longest line I was in was 45 min. at the Holland display and 30 at the Ireland one. As soon as I got in I made a beeline for the 3rd world countries I knew wouldn't be as crowded. I really wanted to see the USA's but 4+ hours was time I didn't want to spend in line.
I've never dealt with long lines at conventions, but a friend and I had to wait in line for about 4 hours at a CD signing. Then later with the same friend it was 3 hours standing in the cold to get into the Shedd Aquarium.
4 hours for a CD signing? Wow. O_O!
I spent pretty much the entire day waiting to get my badge one year at ACen...that was pretty horrific. :( I think I finally got it at 7pm right when everything closed (luckily I got the 3 day pass so I still had two days to play).
Ah~ Sounds like Fanime this year when during pre-reg, the power went out for a few hours... this with people standing in line for a good 4 hours at the time. o_o; At least the line was contained inside the convention center, but still... yikes. o_o;
Out of curiousity, do attendees feel like the exhibit halls close "too early" (particularly because of the long lines they have to wait in to get places)?
So I've heard.
The kicker was even after waiting over night and being one of the 1st dozen at the door we had to fight because Viz had put a quota on how many people could get autographs and people already inside like dealers & exhibitors took up most of the spots. That was changed the next day to giving out tickets to interested parties.
Rumiko doesn't like crowds either and a special room was set up in the middle of the hall so autograph seekers had to go in one at a time to see her.
That's what I've heard as well. I can see first-hand how those with exhibitor badges take full advantage of the opportunity. Although, security was much more strict this year and wouldn't allow it.
I kinda wonder how something like Takahashi's signing that would happen at SDCC these days. There just isn't space. D:
In my experiences, yes. Even if I don't have lines to wait in, I feel that 6pm tends to be too early for exhibit/artist halls to close (of course, I completely understand why they do; artists and sellers want to enjoy the con themselves as well). But as someone who only goes to two or three panels, I don't have much to do after the halls close haha.
I pretty much avoid lines. Did enough of that when I was in the Navy(chow lines, waiting for shots, lines to get gear, & etc.). I will wait to see a movie 2 weeks after it comes out sometimes just to make sure I don't have to put up with a overly long line.
However, I did once wait over night in line at SDCC back in the day for autographs from Rumiko Takahashi.
I remember the reports from that year! Same with Naoko Takeuchi, right?
I'm not a fan of waiting in line or going to crowded places... it's probably one of the only perks of being an exhibitor. :3 Not sure I would attend an event as an attendee... unless there's amazing incentive to do so. ^^;

Anime Expo 07. 4 hours in the sun to get my badge holder even though I had pre-regged. When I finally got the holder, I found out that there were separate areas where pre-regged people could pick them up.
OMG. D: D: D:
I have noticed that with all the years I had attended AX as an attendee... no one ever knew where anything was. o_o;
One year, I was in the masquerade and had to meet up with my group late because I was on a panel. I missed the group move-in and ended up wandering the rafters of the neighboring exhibit hall. X_X;; I had to ask staff member after staff member where the theater was. I eventually found it by accident. LOL.
cant wait for my first expo/con sounds like fun through all the mayhem
To be honest, these cons and expos are fun -- just be prepared for the waits. XD
i have waited 7 hours in kohls for my mom and grandma to finish shopping countless times and all the wile kept my sanity and kept myself decently entertained but it wont be so bad if i take some one with me to my 1st event thanks for the heads up though! :D
The longest line I can remember being in (which isn't very far back) happened recently. A game called Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance came out recently, and the Nintendo World store in NYC was having an early-release launch event. My friend and I didn't get there very early and ended up being far back.
The store being located in the middle of one street, went down and around the corner, down this avenue, then around the next corner and up the street parallel to the store's. These are NYC blocks, so that's a big line.
Worst of it was that after an hour and a half of waiting, they ran out of copies of the game. After reaching the door another hour later, our only consolation was taking pictures with a replica Keyblade (the series's staple weapon), a postcard with some nice artwork, and some spare bags made special for the event.
All in all, was a fun experience.
D: ;;
Ah... at least you didn't walk away empty-handed. ^_^v
the longest line i've been, i think the second longest was the line to get on the despicable me ride which was 4 hours long! and then o.o''' and the 1st was the Simpsons which took like half the day! both on separate visits to universal
Wow~ I haven't been to Universal in -years-!! (I last went when the Jurassic Park ride just opened. o_o;)
Were the rides worth the wait? :D
despicable me was cute but i don't think simpsons was worth it :/
Oh Anise, I know how you feel. :3
oh, and when i was in disneyland, the wait for one ride in carsland, was 3 to 6 hours long! AND THE RIDE WAS ONLY ABOUT TWO MINUTES!!!!!!!
Oops. i mean IT was 3 to 6 hours long.
Now that is a long line for a ride! The only nice thing about Disneyland waits is that they build interesting stuff around the line areas to keep you entertained. XD;
How was the ride, BTW?? :D
Ha ha... I remember at California Adventure Park, at the Toy Story 3 Mania, it would take a really long time to get in! The line wound around and around... I don't know if the line is faster now. =)
Can't say it's been the longest line I've been in, but one of my memorable lines was my first year to Kkon (second year it was held) back at the Ala Moana Hotel. The line for at the door reg was out the hall and around the corner and down the corner of the building when we got there! Though me and my friends did meet this guy who did that ball juggling thing on his hands. The one that it never really leaves contact with the hands? That was pretty cool. No other long lines come to my mind at the moment.
