    Todays comic featured Kana taking apart Komachi, her resin doll from DollyLand.
    nemu*nemu - Surgery

    For those that have never seen a resin doll or don't know someone who has one... you're probably wondering what Kana is actually doing. Taking apart the doll is kinda evil isn't it?

    Well thats kinda what I thought when Kitsy brought home her first resin doll kit. After a bunch of photos and dressing her up, she took her apart! My first thought was "I sure hope she can put her back together again!", and then my second thought was "why the heck is she taking it apart?".

    Well taking the doll apart allows you to perfect them in a way. Because the dolls parts are made of a colored resin, each part has a bit of what is called flash on the edges where the mold was pushed together to create the piece. These look like joint lines and are unsightly at times, especially when you are photographing your dolly and want them to look sort of "real". If any of you have built a plastic model kit (gundam, cars, etc) you know what this is. Kitsy actually took each piece of the doll and removed the flash then sanded the resin until the part was smooth. She then sprayed each piece with a clear coat to protect it from stains and scratches. Like any model kit, this takes a while but it pays off if you're patient enough.

    I do still get kinda freaked out when I Kitsy takes the eyes out of the dolls head....

    But anyway, thats whats going on in todays strip, just so that you don't think Kana is nuts or anything. Heh.

    Ahh~ I should probably chime in here as these particular strips were spawned from my own collection of resin dolls. ^_^;

    (Suzu, Marin, Chise, & Aki)

    Above are the four girls Kana's "Komachi" is based off of~

    Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls, or ABJD (sometimes just BJD), are dolls hand-cast from polyurethane resin and highly customizable to personal interests and tastes. They range in size from 23cm to 60+cm and cost anywhere from $100 to $3000+ depending on demand and how rare they are.

    As KS mentioned, I like to sand down my dolls as soon as I get them as it helps with the "bonding" process. As you might see above, each doll has a different look and feel about them based on their wigs, eyes, clothes, and even how they are posed. Face-ups make a huge difference in determining a doll's personality - I personally prefer them fresh-faced and none-too-dramatic. ^_^

    I'm certain we'll see more of Komachi in the somewhat near future~ :D

    Very pretty! I am avoiding BJD like crazy because I have enough habits to support. I can't afford another one as expensive to maintain as BJD.
