Omiyage

The Japanese have a specific word for the Art of gifting souvenirs - "omiyage"!

It's very prevalent, here in Hawaii, where we see tourists from all over and have numerous shops that cater to the business of souvenirs. One of the most notable being the "infamous" ABC stores that decorate almost every single block of Waikiki. (There are even 2 located at Ala Moana Shopping Center - the world's largest outdoor mall.) They have just about everything and anything a visitor might need or be looking for - just a block or two away! It's hard to beat convenience like that!

Popular gifts are always the macadamia nut covered chocolates, fresh pineapples, and kona coffee. Other notable items are the beef jerky, coconut bras and "grass" skirts, plastic flower leis, ukuleles, shells, jewelry, and clothes like mu'u mu'us and aloha shirts. Likewise, when we travel away from home, favorite gifts for friends and family are regional foods, knicknacks, and things we just can't find locally like Krispie Kreme donuts (unless you travel to Maui!), Trader Joe's snacks, Bath & Body Works hand soaps. XD

It's like sharing a little bit of the vacation with others! :D

We continue our talks on Tuesday at Salt Lake-Moanalua Library at 5:30pm! We'll hope to see you there! :D
