      So when did Hawai'i (sp?) get "discovered," who did it, and do you get a holiday for it?

      It makes sense, though. Hawai'i is no more part of the Americas than American Samoa...

        Hawaii was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1778, but we don't celebrate it. We celebrate our statehood day though.

        Technically though, most don't celebrate "Discoverer's Day" here in Hawaii -- it's a holiday the state gave up for "MLKJr Day". It's still a federal holiday though, so banks, post offices, and other services were closed.
